Misheer pays compliment to daughter of Trippi

Published by charl on July 12, 2009

COLUMNIST Sarah Whitelaw presents news from the international world of bloodstock and thoroughbred breeding.

Misheer, who ran an impressive winner of the recent Group 3 Cherry Hinton Stakes, paid a handsome compliment to Jealous Again, a daughter of Drakenstein Stud’s Trippi. Jealous Again handed Misheer her sole career defeat when thrashing the Clive Brittain trained filly by five lengths in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes. The Trippi filly was subsequently purchased by Sheikh Mohammed for an undisclosed amount.

Misheer, who has now won three of her four starts to date, will now be aimed at the Gp1 Moyglare Stud Stakes later this year.
Strike The Tiger, a son of Wilgerbosdrift’s Tiger Ridge, will be aimed at the prestigious Cradle Stakes in the USA. The unbeaten gelding, who created history by becoming the first US-trained horse to win at Royal Ascot, will first be aimed at the Chenery Stakes at the end of July.

Choice lots on offer in France

The Arqana catalogue for Deauville’s August yearling sale is out. On offer is no fewer than 502 superbly bred yearlings. Leading stallions represented include Monsun, Danehill Dancer, Anabaa, Galileo, Distorted Humor, Rahy, Storm Cat and Montjeu.
Promising young sires with lots on offer include Oratorio, already the sire of a stakes winner in his first crop, Medaglia D’oro, sire of Rachel Alexandra, and Dubawi, already the sire of six winners in his first crop.

The recent deceased Anabaa’s five lots include a colt out of the Gp1 winner Dedication, whilst Arch is the sire of a colt out of Great Lady Slew. This makes him a half-brother to Slew The Red.

Cape Cross, currently heading the UK general sires list, has four yearlings on offer. Amongst them is a colt out of the top juvenile Green Swallow, and a filly out of the smart sprinter Cap Coz.

Perenial leading sire, Danehill Dancer, has 12 yearlings up for offer. His son out of the stakes winner Slip Dance is bound to attract attention, as well the filly from the family of Casey Tibbs. Top US sire, Distorted Humor, has just one of offer, a filly from multiple Gr1 winner You.

One of the highlights of the sale could be lot 61. By the recently retired Storm Cat, the colt is a half-brother to the ill fated Dubai World Cup winner Electrocutionist.

Highlands acquisition doing well

Highlands’ Farms’ latest sire buy, Antonius Pius, is currently firing with his first crop of Northern Hemisphere two-year-olds. He is the joint third most successful first crop sires, having been represented by six individual winners. His winners include the unbeaten Metal Soldier and Royal Ascot runner Antonius Morris.

By Danzig, the sire of National Assembly, Antonius Pius is also among the leading first crop sires down. He is in the top first crop sires of individual winners in Australia, where the Danzig male line has done so well. It is not surprising that his runners are showing such precocity, as Antonius Pius was a top-class juvenile. He won his first two starts, including the Gp3 Railway Stakes, before taking on the best of his generation in the Gp1 Dewhurst Stakes.

The Railway Stakes has been won by some of horse racing’s greatest names, such as George Washington (Danehill), champion sire El Prado (Sadler’s Wells), Rock of Gibraltar (Danehill), and last year Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer). The latter has gone on to win four Group 1 races.
