Charl Pretorius discusses the PA with “The Betmaster” Jason Dedekind for Arlington Racing on Friday 18 December 2009:
Race 2
No. 1 – Second Foundation – He’s in form, has a good draw and with some proven stamina on his side, he looks like he’ll enjoy this distance. He also has the benefit of Richard Fourie in the saddle.
No. 7 – Classtasy – He’s another horse that I think will relish 1800m. Last time out he was backed in from 7-1 to 5-1. He lost a few lengths and was cramped during that race. He’s a definite inclusion here.
No. 9 – Storm Benevolo (ARG) – He’s always there or thereabouts but he can be inconsistent at times. There’s a question mark over whether he’ll do well over 1800m at this track, he may be better over 2000 or 2400m but in an open race like this, it’s best to include him.
No. 16 – Callisto – The Steenkamp stable is in form and this filly seems to like distances of around 1800m. Punters must definitely go as wide as they can afford because this is a very difficult first leg.
Race 3
No. 1 – All Ablaze – The top weight has to be included here. I’m not a big fan of 3 year olds carrying top weight but he does seem to have a bit of scope. In his penultimate race he just never got going. Then last time out he was fancied, backed in and was running on nicely with MJ in the saddle.
No. 5 – Mhlekazi – This old-timer is a 7 or 8 time winner running against 1 or 2 time winners. He seems to have bounced back to form, his last run over 1000m was a bit short for him. Today he’s over a more favourable distance and he’s actually won over this course and distance before.
No. 6 – Private Park – I’m going to include him as a bit of a roughie in this leg. Unfortunately he has the widest draw but looking back at his run behind Royal Reign, this horse must have a chance here.
Race 4
No. 2 – Island Retreat – Based on the weight turnaround with No. 3 Sudden Time (AUS), this horse is 2.5kgs better off today and should definitely be included.
No. 3 – Sudden Time (AUS) – I like this horse today. He’s found his form and won the last two races a little bit easier than the margins suggest. He’s one of the better bets on today’s card and I make him a PA banker here.
No. 6 – Laurels – For those who like No. 2 Island Retreat, then this horse also needs to be included because he’s 3.5kgs better with Sudden Time (AUS) on their last meeting.
Race 5
No. 1 – Tafaani – When first looking through the form, I liked this mare and the way that she ran on and won nicely last time but when considering the weight turnaround with No. 3 –Russian Lace, it does bring other horses into play.
No. 2 – Scipture – This is the one to beat in this race. This filly also forms a nice coupling with No. 6 – Empressionante.
Race 6
No. 1 – Surfin’ USA – This horse, at these weights, has got this field stone cold. I think today can be a hat-trick for him and he’s my second PA banker of the day.
No. 3 – Vangelis – For those punters who are looking to beat the favourite, this horse is one to include.
No. 7 – Ecole Militaire – He ran on very nicely last time to beat Vangelis and he’s well suited to this distance. He’s another one to include for those who like to play wider.
Race 7
No. 4 – Golden Luci – This is the one to beat in this race.
No. 2 – Senjor Josh – He’s an old PE campaigner and has returned to the Eastern Cape. He represents class and on his day, he could make this field gallop. I won’t exclude him from my perms but I always like to watch those horses that are having a first run back in PE. If he’d shown more in his last two Johannesburg runs, then I would’ve be very keen to include him in my PA.
No. 7 – Big Drummer – Based on their last meeting, there’s a 1.5kgs swing in the weights with Golden Luci.
Race 8
No. 3 – Sleepless Nights – He’s back over 1000m today and I feel this is his best distance. Paul Whitmore rides for Bremner and he knows how to get horses going in these type of sprint races.
No. 8 – Sports Coupe – I like this horse as a roughie. I haven’t included him in my PA but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did pop up because his Cape Town form was solid enough to give this field a run for their money.
No. 10 – Welsh Parade – She must have a chance, based on the run where she finished 1.75 behind Saxe Coburg. That colt runs today in Race 7 a MR 90 Handicap.
No. 11 – Fast Filly – Last time I left this horse out and she cost me my PA. She’s an in and out type of horse but she does show tremendous pace and I’m definitely going to include her today.
The Betmaster’s PA:
1st Leg - 1, 7, 9, 16
2nd Leg - 1, 5, 6
3rd Leg - 3
4th Leg - 1, 2
