INTERVIEWS WITH MATHEW DE KOCK (MK) AND LOUIS GOOSEN (LG)

RACE 1: JOYFUL has been working at Randjesfontein for a while and of our three runners I expect this one to take to the sand best. He is by Hennessy whose offspring do well on sand. He should fight out the finish. (MK)

RACE 2: LET IT BE and WOROOD travelled from Durban on Monday, both are very well, were not affected by the trip from Summerveld. Let It Be failed badly on a wet track once, but I don’t believe the sand can be compared to a wet grass track, she should go well, I’d banker her in the P/A. They sprinted up on Tuesday and there were no problems. (MK)

RACE 3: I’m surprised that JACK ROCK is as short as 11-10, I’ve said a few times he needs further, but I’m keeping him ticking over with a view to the feature season, his aim is the Dingaans. They’ve backed the Paul Matchett runner SAINT PIERRE, he goes into my Pick 6 with stable mate CAPTAIN BLUSH, and I’d throw Jack Rock in too, he should be involved even though he needs morfe ground. (LG)

RACE 5: I don’t know much about WOROOD, but the guys in Durban do rate her. She needs further, but showed good enough pace on her 1200m debut win to be a serious factor here. Candy Cotton is perhaps the danger. (MK)

CANDY COTTON needs further, as I said last time, but she is classy, a Graded-placed Maiden in this company and she’s not out of it, include her. (LG).

ROB ZACKEY INTERVIEW

KENLWORTH, SATURDAY
Race 3: I liked KOMATIPOORT as my best bet last time and he was a bit disappointing, but deserves another chance. I still like the looks of him and make him worth a bet.

Race 4: Leaning towards the Marshall runner FLY AMERICAN, but will be adding the consistent ACT WITH HONOUR and MASTER BARRY, lightly raced with room for improvement.

Race 5: CREE LODGE is versatile and can’t be ignored. However the true sprinters NOBLE ACT (likes a soft track) and MIDNIGHT GAMBLER, one we fancied last time and better over 1200m, are the obvious P/A runners. I’m adding Mike Bass’ LOS COLMOS too.

Race 6: Well bred and good-looking ALINGA looks destined for better things and gets the vote as a banker for all exotics.

Race 7: Greg Ennion’s ABINGTON was tipped by Rob Champion last time and Greg said after the race the horse was still in need, so with a few lengths improvement to come he could follow his Maiden with another win. Once again Karl Neisius has a chance on SAM THE MAN, nice form and well drawn, and NELSON AN NAPOLEON is a good horse to cover with in the P/A.

Race 8: JEAN ROI returns to 1600m after a below par run over 1800m last time – he probably didn’t enjoy the trip, but when he won after a rest recently he was very impressive, expecting him to win, but let’s cover in the P/A with STATE CROWN, good collateral form with JEAN ROI.

Race 9: Nicely bred BIASCA would have come on from her good debut and had the looks of a winner here, from a good yard so I’m going to take a chance and make her another banker.

ROB’S PA KENIL:
2 x 3/8/11 x 3/7/9 x 7 x 4/7/11 x 1/7 x 9. R54.

VAAL SATURDAY

(Notes taken from Mike de Kock after podcast: VL SAT R2 UP COMPANY fancied to run a good race, should be in the money. CLWD SUN: R2 EMPENOSO HENN, looks promising, expected to be competitive. R3 RECUSO, not showing all that much in work at present).

Race 2: In Race 2 I fancy a big run from UP COMPANY, from a strong formline and looks set for improvement.

Race 3: We probably need to include a few in this apprentice race – KZN visitor VALLOIRE, ELLA’S PARK, fair after Maiden, DONE ‘N DUSTED, good recent form and looks about ready to win again and SNOW SPECIAL, a winner in a similar field last time.

Race 4: Piere Strydom believes LIAN DANCER is hard to beat here, he can chase on PARLOTONE. I will stay with the pair. (Charl suggests DURABLE FIRE as an inclusion in Pick 6, Steve Moffat in form).

Race 5: Classy FENERBACHE is back in form, suited to sand but his 60kg could counter him against FOREST, handy weight, receiving 8kg from Fenerbache and a good bet in my book.

Race 6: At the weights the decent PARADE PRINCE makes lots of appeal, banker.

Race 7: IMALI looks top class and, still improving, should win it for Mike Azzie and JP vd Merwe. Versatile and classy PHUNYUKA always a danger, RENEGADE blinkers off at Piere’s request, chance.

Race 8: CINNAMON SUGAR really looks a class above this field and is expected to romp home, positive vibes from the Roy Magner stable.

Race 9: Let’s end the day with a wide net to make sure – five runners for our P/A – CWEBE CWEBE – KZN visitor who won impressively here last time out; consistent REBECCA SHARP; in-form SARAH SMILIE; Fortune’s mount KASKA, capable on her day and OVER BRIDGET, set for improvement this track and trip.

PA:
2/4/5/10 x 1,2 x 1/6 x 6 x 1/2/8 x 5 x 3/4/5/8/10. R240.

Charl’s Jackpot: R30
1/3/6 x 3/6 x 1/2/4/8/10 x 5.

(CARRYOVER PICK 6, R797 000, VAAL)

CLAIRWOOD SUNDAY:

Some well-bred first-timers at the meeting, all in weak form fields, watch IL SAGGIATORE (Race 1) and EMPENOSO HENN (Race 2).

Race 3: Watch for more improvement from TIGER TRAP, my P/A choice along with with two others, CHILL AND RECUSO.

Race 4: CASEY’S QUI has roughly best form in the race and can win for Alec Laird and Andrew Fortune, include the De Kock runner EMERALD DREAM, nice debut.

Race 5: Tricky handicap - you’ll probably have to include the field in Pick 6 - the P/A choices are game KEAT’S DRIFT, well-performed Cape runner SHIMMERING FLAME and DIRETORATE, big chance on recent second to Galileo’s Galaxy.

Race 6: The banker for the day is beautiful chestnut DRACONIAN, very impressive on debut and set for a bright career. Hard to beat and should be exciting to watch.

Race 7: Gauteng raider IBROX PARK is very fast - could do it again from start-to-finish, but under top weight could get some cheek from Duncan Howell’s runner LA PUCELLE.

Race 8: Not sure what will run and what will be scratched, to be safe let’s go for EXCLAIM N EXCLUDE (if scratched will go onto stablemate and favourite BLUE VOYAGER, and NIMLEY, in good form.

Race 9: RED BRIDGE must have a big chance on his excellent last run - third to Top Division sprinter Good Thing - add useful SPORTS ACCLAIM, better than recent and CATCHA CALL, fair all-round form and set for improvement.

PA:
2/12/15 x 1/7 x 2/7/8 x 10 x 1/2 x 1/5 x 1/5/8. R216.

LISTEN TO PODCAST:

MIKE AZZIE AND ERNEST OERTEL INTERVIEWS

VARIETY (Race 1) and ELDORADO (Race 3), were both inexperienced first time out but ran very well, the experience of a single run makes a big difference. VARIETY set a fast time over the last 400 in her run, her dam won the Oaks but she’s small and fast. I respect Mike de Kock’s first-timer IGUGU, there has been money for her -but our filly is ready for a big run. ELDORADO s a big strong horse, I think the Vaal straight 1400 will suit him, he is still green but if he puts his mind on the job -and I expect he will, he will be a hard horse to beat. (MA)

RACE 4: MILESANDMORE has been running well, close up and she has a chance of reversing the form of her last run with DOVER CROSSING, because Marthinus Mienie wasn’t hard on her last time. She had to be eased back at one stage which would have cost her ground. She has improvement to come, she is a late maturer, but we have a shout, Andrew Fortune knows her and he is back up. (EO)

INTERVIEWS WITH STEVE MOFFATT (SM), CRAIG MAYHEW (CM) AND CORNE SPIES (CS):

RACE 1:

WARDOTCOM is a nice sort, we’re expecting good improvement today, if he delivers his work he might even win it. Definite Quartet inclusion (CM).

COUNT DUMANI is a promising horse, second on debut to a good sort and has a winning chance, the drawback is that he is up against older horses, it’s early in the season, and he is still green which only more racing experience will help for. (CS)

RACE 2:

JACARANDA MOON is fit and well, she is by Victory Moon and should go well on sand, can fight out the finish if all goes well. VICTORIOUS MAID has breathing problems, we’re trying a tongue tie today and hoping for improvement, she does show ability, might be worthwhile including in a Quartet. (CM).

I expected WINDY CITY to win on her debut, she finished second to one of our other runners and has improved, will have a chance today, should finish in the money, needs more experience. (CS)

RACE 3:

GLASS SKY is a big, leggy horse who will improve with racing, he is drawn wide but we’re expecting a decent run from him. Quartet definite. (CS)

RACE 4

MAJESTIC LITES has some collateral form with Shuffles and has a place chance here at a long price. (SM)

RACE 5:

ARABIAN GLAMOUR is a nice type, improving still and more to come, also a young horse up against older ones, but include her in everything. (CS)

RACE 6:

SUN SCREEN is eight years old but he is striding better now than ever before, he has improved after a rest and enjoys his racing still. Add him to the Quartet, though he needs further. (CS)

RACE 7:

MIGHTY ASSASSIN is doing very well, today I think we can win it, we’ve sorted out a few problems and on the level of his penultimate run he will go close. (CM)

RACE 8:

THICK AS THIEVES is well for this race, a number of the fancied runners are drawn wide, some will chase early to get across so we’ll see how the race pans out, he has a good chance, include him in everything. (SM)

WEEKEND POD

Fairview Friday:

Rob’s Double for the day:

RACE 2: TRENZADOR into RACE 3 COCOA BEACH

Charl’s DOUBLE:

Race 4 ADMIRAL CAMDEN INTO Race 7 HALLANDALE

Charl’s P/A:

4.5 X 1/2 X 4 X 1/7/9 X 8/9 X 4/6 X 2/3/6. R192.

Kenilworth Saturday:

RACE 2: KYLURIAN stands out on form, I believe, but this race could go to a first-timer, WINTERBERG is well bred especially. Two other P/A horses are SIX FLAGS and EAGLE SQUADRON.

RACE 3: After the scratching of TUCANA, MY CASTLE should win, but don’t ignore the in-form Van Reenen stable’s CHOSEN KID.

RACE 4: BEAT THAT should win it, one of my bets of the day.

RACE 5: NAUGHTY GIRL has perhaps the best form in the race, but I’d like to add LAZER LADY in the P/A, it is fairly competitive.

RACE 6: Trickiest of the day, FOREST CHILD looks value though, consistently in the money and narrowly beaten last time out. At the weights POWER AND GLORY could be a surprise package, well drawn. We’re adding REPTILLIAN to the P/A as well.

RACE 7: The lower weights make most appeal, in particular CHIPPENDALE, a decent sort who will win more races. IMPERIAL FOX and EARL OF LITCHFIELD the P/A cover.

RACE 8: I was very impressed with SUPER MODEL’s first win, this one looks a good sort in the making and i’m bankering her. (Add roughie GLOWING AMBER for cover if you want - CP).

P/A 1/2/8/16 x 5/10 x 7 x 2/5 x 6/8/14 x 8/9/10 x 3 (13). R144/288.

Turffontein Saturday:

RACE 1: Mike de Kock doesn’t make his first-timer JETSONS a good thing, he thinks 9-10 is too short a price, but this is a weak form field, Joe Soma says his runner LIBERTY EAGLE is short of his best, so perhaps a first timer will win, 40-1 about well-bred KETANO could be value.\

RACE 2: CHECCETTI looks a good thing.

RACE 3: BLUE BABY JEAN has a bit of class and improvement to come, I prefer STELLA MIA on a good last win, she may have enough confidence now to follow up.

RACE 4: ALTELEKKER second from a wide draw last time, one of many with chances, the favourite FREEDOM goes a mile first time, good sprint form but on collaterals LAND BARON will be right next to him. Mike Azzie’s 3-way coupling well-bred, watch betting, include in Pick 6.

RACE 5: Open race -A LITTLE TIBSY seems best over 1800m, but she was penalised only 2 points for good last win, can go in again. CALL AGAIN COLLEEN appeals, the worry is that the form from her last run not franked. Don’t ignore the Maiden HOT TIP, has enough form to feature.

RACE 6: Our horse AMERICAN GANGSTA is back to his best, looks well and is working well, no reason why he can’t win again. ROLLING CLOUDS gets a decent draw for a change, could be a factor over 2000m. AL FELON is my third p/a horse.

RACE 7: Looks a two-horse race between LION’S BLOOD, top class at best and CLUB VICTOR, brings IRISH FLAME form into the race.

RACE 8: I am bullish about Piere Strydom’s mount OFFICER CLASS, stable in form, handy weight, competitive form in this class.

RACE 9: IMPERIAL PASSION has had his problems, but bug run after rest against stronger last time, should win if he repeats.

ROB’S P/A: 3,8 X 1,8,12 X 6,7 X 6,7,10 X 4,5 X 10 X 3. R72.

Scottsville Sunday:

ROB’S PA: 3 X 1,3,7 X 10 X 2,3,7 X 9 X 4 X 3,5,7,9. r36. (Changed since podcast)

RACE 2: I’m happy to banker AU PAIR BOY in the P/A.

RACE 3: No chances taken, Im putting in ZOOT, KEEN ACCORD, FLOWERS OF SPRING.

RACE 4: Here I really like MATHAFA, my banker in everything and we’re due for a change of luck!

RACE 5: Here’s a trappy race, again I’d like to make sure - my runners are BIG LIGHT, GEORGE CROSS and LEGAL MAXIM.

RACE 6: I’m a HEREDITY fan, Wallace Tolmay doesn’t often raid here, the form behind Dreamy Times is strong, I think this one will fight it out.

RACE 7: CANDY TUFT packs a lot of class and ability and should run a place, at least.

RACE 8: The last-leg blues struck again this weekend - I’m going to go in solid here with four horses, the backed IRISH EMINENCE, RICKY MY SON, nice roughie, also BOLD ALLIANCE and handy-weighted SPECTRE.

ENDS.

INTERVIEWS WITH PAUL PETER (PP) AND LOUIS GOOSEN (LG):

RACE 1: CANDY COTTON has rested, I don’t rush my horses back in but she has the class and the form. She is a filly I expect to train on perhaps even better than Waywest Goddess, certainly over further. She works well on the sand track proper, she is well and has a big chance. SOUL SISTER came to me fit and stripped, she is also doing very well and is a Quartet inclusion. (LG)

RACE 2: SONS OF THUNDER was outpaced first time out when second, then ran a poor race but seems better on sand, he is doing fine. The filly QUEEN SARAH has fair form and good speed, there isn’t much to choose between my pair. Quartet chances to both. (PP)

RACE 3 TOYZ FOR THE BOYZ found her last run too far, she has the ability to finish in the first four. (PP)

RACE 4: ROCABAR raced very wide against Polo on Saturday, we’ll try different tactics, back end of Quartets. (PP)

RACE 5: BIEN needs further, but he is doing very well. Must have a small Quartet chance. (LG).

RACE 7: GO ME GAL ran a fair race for us in a stronger field last time, we need to work her out, she doesn’t go through with her effort, wide draw. Piere Strydom phoned for the ride on BELLOTTO FLASH, if she reproduces her work she will go close, though also not too badly drawn and only the race will show whether she still enjoys racing, she has more than enough ability to make a challenge. (LG)

RACE 8: JUAN BELMONTE is a very nice horse, we have a confident jockey on and he’s one we expect to go close today. (PP).

ROB ZACKEY INTERVIEW:

CLAIRWOOD SUNDAY:

PA: 3,6,9,10 X 1 X 1,2,3,7 X 7,9,12 X 2,8 X 2 X 4,9. r192.

Two recommended bankers are MY KAZZIE (Race 3), should outclass her field and WE HAVE LIFTOFF (Race 7), good price, on last MR82 run big chance against weaker.

TURFFONTEIN SATURDAY:

Rob’s P/A: 11 x 2/9/10 x 2/4/6 x 1/6 x 1/5 x 1/2 x 5. R72.

RACE 3: FORT JEFFERSON is a good bet, looks ready to win.

RACE 4: Three runners for my P/A are GENTLEMAN’S CLUB, good form and Azzie/vdMerwe in form, RABADASH, looks a fair and improving type of horse, also OZYMANDIAS, chance at best, good Pick 6 roughie.

RACE 5: PERSONAL QUESTION is favourite, but I’m not sure it’s clear-cut, I’dd add DESOLATE VIEW and easy recent winner POLO. My roughie here is SHOT IN THE DARK from the strong Magner stable, watch her for a good run.

RACE 6: FALAZI a good value price after showing a return to her best last time. Back up with the Magner coupling.

RACE 7: FIRST UP an unlucky loser last time, has a big chance today. WINKING JACK also makes strong appeal.

RACE 8: Indications are that QUICK SINGLE is top class, we’ll see today because she’s up against the classy FLYINGWITHOUTWINGS. Both in the PA to make sure.

RACE 9: Barring OVER THE ANVIL this looks a flat field, many off form. I’d take a chance and banker the Woodruff runner.

KENILWORTH SATURDAY:

ROB’S PA: 1 X 16 X 4/7/8 X 3/7 X 2/4 X 1/5 X 6. R24.

RACE 3: GREY COSSACK stands out on this race, we’ve seen some odds-ons get beat this week, but this one looks a safe banker for the P/A

RACE 4:THE NILE LADY is an improver here, she’s should relish this trip, has scope and from a nice draw I make her worth a bet today.

RACE 5: JEAN ROI won impressively after a rest last time and can follow up, the dangers are obviously the old rivals FOREST OF DEAN and BADGER LAKE, both not out of it, a half kilo swing in favour of the Kruyer runner.

RACE 6: PERGAMON ALTER has placed to better, can get it right today, he has been knocking. BROWN PENNY my P/A cover, but SLINGA MALINGA is a Pick 6 addition, well fancied when disappointing last time, can surprise.

RACE 7: STRAWBERRY ICE and DANCE WITH AL stands out head and shoulders on their recent KZN form.

RACE 8: ICEMBERG is in good form, has always looked a nice sort and can go on from here, the promising MASTER BARRY could also be destined for better, PLAY NICE is talented, not out of it.

RACE 9: A good race for BEACON BAY to get off the mark.

Fairview Friday:

PA R324: 10/11/14 x 1/2/10 x 1/7/8 x 2/3/11 x 3/10 x 3 x 5/9.

RACE 2: PERE JOSEPH’S draw is a concern, will try to beat him with last time’s value bet GULF COAST and adding to the P/A MILLION MILES snd UPSTAGE, all well drawn for the tight track.

RACE 3: YOUTH CLUB disappointing when tipped last time, better than that, watch in this field. IMPORTANTISIMO put it all together last time and won well, again I will try to beat him though with Youth Club, also EYEOFTHEWORLD, poorly drawn last time but has good form, and my roughie MACARTHUR PARK at the bottom of the handicap.

RACE 4: XAMA FIRST won well last time, claimed and has a good chance with in-form Greg Cheyne on board. SPEEDWELL makes appeal and must go in, LEGAL LADY has the right credentials too and deserves respect.

RACE 5: PARIS TO PEKING was good, honest servant when my stable had him, he is in form and could win with front running tactics, but I am always weary of older horses and their inconsistency, will go rather for HARVEST DAY, in top form and likes track and trip. SLUMDOG OSCAR did well in his only try this distance, he has a few more wins in him and is not an unlikely winner today off a low weight.

RACE 6: Rob (and Charl), both fancy CANDEMO, particularly on his run to smart Grade 1 winner Copper Parade. For safety though will add the consistent CHOOSE THE GROOVE.

RACE 7: As game and honest as he is, the now legendary HEAR THE DRUMS is coming to the end of his reign and everything points to OCEAN’S AWAY as the one who will take the crown. He’s my banker.

RACE 8: Good competitive handicap in which SOUTHERN PRIDE, with good form North and South, makes the first impression. However ZILI is my fancy, not only on her run to classy BANDOL, but with a confirmation of her ability via other good sorts like Golden Lucci. WATER IS GOLD an obvious big runner on form/weight.

Summaries for other meetings to be added in due course.

LISTEN TO PODCAST:

ROB ZACKEY INTERVIEW:
CLAIRWOOD SUNDAY:
PA: 3,6,9,10 X 1 X 1,2,3,7 X 7,9,12 X 2,8 X 2 X 4,9. r192.
Two recommended bankers are MY KAZZIE (Race 3), should outclass her field and WE HAVE LIFTOFF (Race 7), good price, on last MR82 run big chance against weaker.
TURFFONTEIN SATURDAY:
Robs P/A: 11 x 2/9/10 x 2/4/6 x 1/6 x 1/5 x 1/2 x 5. R72.
RACE 3: FORT JEFFERSON is a good bet, looks ready to win.
RACE 4: Three runners for my P/A are GENTLEMANS CLUB, good form and Azzie/vdMerwe in form, RABADASH, looks a fair and improving type of horse, also OZYMANDIAS, chance at best, good Pick 6 roughie.
RACE 5: PERSONAL QUESTION is favourite, but Im not sure its clear-cut, Idd add DESOLATE VIEW and easy recent winner POLO.
RACE 8: Indications are that QUICK SINGLE is top class, well see today because shes up against the classy FLYINGWITHOUTWINGS. Both in the PA to make sure.
RACE 9: Barring OVER THE ANVIL this looks a flat field, many off form. Id take a chance and banker the Woodruff runner.
KENILWORTH SATURDAY:
ROBS PA: 1 X 16 X 4/7/8 X 3/7 X 2/4 X 1/5 X 6. R24.
RACE 3: GREY COSSACK stands out on this race, weve seen some odds-ons get beat this week, but this one looks a safe banker for the P/A
RACE 4:THE NILE LADY is an improver here, shes should relish this trip, has scope and from a nice draw I make her worth a bet today.
